Glassworks | Museum of Glassmaking

Glassmaking is an important chapter in the history of Šumava and the Bavarian Forest. In the heyday of Czech glassmaking in the 18th and 19th centuries, there was nowhere else in Bohemia or in Europe such a concentration of glassworks as in the relatively small area of Šumava and the Bavarian Forest. Over the course of about six centuries, more than a hundred glassworks operated here. Šumava was also advantageous for glassmakers because it was the route of several ancient trade routes that have linked southern and northern Europe since time immemorial. These routes enabled the sale of glassmaking products from the Hvozd forest area to major cities throughout Europe.
